Keep Going: ChatGPT Remembers the Conversation

As long as you stay in the same conversation, ChatGPT remembers everything you wrote before.

After you get your first answer, here's a simple truth that makes everything easier: ChatGPT doesn't forget. As long as you stay in the same conversation, it remembers every word you wrote before.

A conversation is set up like a text-message thread. The writing line is at the bottom, you send a message, and the answer appears above it. Messages stack up one under another, and you can scroll up any time to read it all again.

Why that's so handy

A moment ago you asked for a shopping list for four people, and ChatGPT remembered that. Now you can simply say add, change, or take away, and it knows exactly what you mean. You don't have to repeat the whole thing, just like talking with a person.

Of course. For four people, a simple apple crisp works nicely, or a fruit salad with apple, banana, and orange.
  1. 1Your short follow-up, with nothing repeated
  2. 2ChatGPT remembers the four people and answers to match
In the same conversation, ChatGPT remembers what you wrote before.

That's the real difference from an internet search. With a search, every request starts from zero. Here you have one conversation that grows step by step. And when you want to start a whole new topic, you just open a new conversation with the New chat button, so nothing gets mixed together.

What you do now

Go back into that same shopping-list conversation and type:

Please add a simple dessert for those same four people.

Watch for the nice moment: ChatGPT picks up right where you left off and knows on its own that it's four people, without you saying it again.
